Since 1985, we've been reading The Polar Express by writer and illustrator Chris Van Allsburg. There's something so whimsical about the plot, which features a young boy hopping onto a magical train called the Polar Express. What unfolds is a ride like nothing we had ever experienced before. And now, cities all over the United States are performing their own interactive shows inspired by the now-classic story. Whether you've read it or seen the 2004 film, you're not going to want to miss the opportunity to spend Christmas riding along the Polar Express.

A company called Rail Events, Inc. puts on the show in 50 locations across the U.S., and many of them are featured in our list below. But there are plenty of other Christmas trains available, all of which put their own spin and getting in the holiday spirit. From homemade chocolate chunk cookies to warm greetings from Santa and Mrs. Claus, this is the ultimate Christmas train ride experience that's fun for the entire family. Most start around $40, but we promise that this will be something you and your kids talk about for years. Many families have even gone on to make it a holiday tradition during the November and December months.
